The Australian Plants journal
Australian Plants is a national journal which has always been produced by the Australian Plants Society New South Wales (formerly Society for Growing Australian Plants NSW) on behalf of the national organisation, the Australian Native Plants Society Australia (ANPSA), formerly the Association of Societies for Growing Australian Plants (ASGAP), and the other Regions.
The journal has been in continued production since December 1959. The first issue was 16 pages with only two colour photos; those on the front and back covers. There was an editorial committee with the Managing Editor being Mr W H Payne. The cost was three shillings for subscribers or the journal was included in membership fees. Bill Payne was the sole editor for over 40 years.
A feature of many earlier issues was the excellent scaled line drawings. As technology and layout and printing processes improved so did the capacity to have coloured photos included. Recent issues have 52 pages. The A5 format has been retained.
The original name of the Society was the Society for Growing Australian Plants and the interests of many members related to propagation and gardens. While this was a primary focus in the early years, there has always been considerable attention to the natural landscapes of Australia, the natural occurrence of plant species and plant identification. With broader interests among members and subscribers and increasing interest in conservation, articles are provided across all such spectrums to support our aims of growing, promoting and conserving our Australian flora. As the readership ranges from those with a general interest and avid amateurs to professionals in science and horticulture, it is important for the content to be authoritative but still within the reach of all readers.
A PDF version of all issues from Vol 1 No.1 through to those published prior to the last two years is available on the national website anpsa.org.au. In this way access to the issues and the information contained in them has been made available to the general public.
The PDFs are searchable. There are also indexes to many of the earlier volumes.
